Pope John Paul II prays in front of the statue of the Virgin Mary at the Chapel of the Apparitions in Fatima on May 13, 1982. The Pope visited the shrine to give thanks for surviving the 1981 assassination attempt, when he was shot in St. Peter’s Square.

The Polish Pope encapsulated Our Lady’s message when he gave his 1982 homily at the Portugal shrine.
